I can't comment on INFDS. I'm working with S/36 flat files <sigh>, so INFDS won't help me.

Although time will tell whether this or using the INFDS will be the easiest to figure out in the future. INFDS wins out for elegance.

I read into a generic DS. I check the record ID variable in the generic DS, and then load it into the appropriate DS.
