Another and possibly easier method to accomplish what you want to do:
Create a printer device of "Generic/Text Only", this connects to port "FILE:". 
Create a CA/400 printer session that "prints" to this printer.  Select the
"Transform the print data to Ascii" option box.  Select the "Other Printer"
printer model.

Now, when you send -any- printout to this printer, you will receive a message
box on the screen asking for the name and location of the text file to save to.
