Al- I have always believed that the data be entered at the time and place the 
activity occurs and also by the person(s) who performed the task(s).  Who 
better 
knows what actually took place?  Granted it requires some training and a 
certain 
degree of "user friendliness"; however, in my opinion, this is definitely the 
way to go.  The trick is providing the user friendly interface, training, and 
business process discipline required for success.   We have implemented a data 
collection system which provides: 

        - 24 X 7 availability 
        - user-friendly interface
        - instantaneous BPCS data base update (typical response time 2-3 
seconds)
        - on-line real-time data validation and user freindly error messages

Our manufacturing and distribution sites are very happy with the results and we 
enjoy extremely high data accuracy as a result.

We are using BPCS 4.0.05CD running on networked As/400's.  The data is fed di-
rectly to BPCS files from Intermec Janus 2020 handhelds using a sockets 
interface to CIM600 for transactions.  There are no servers in between.  

It can be done.
