Manufacturing mode is also involved in AS/400 BPCS405CD where it is 
accessed via Routings and BOM.

Think in terms of two or more standard ways to make a product.
What we have used it for is in repairs ... the regular mode is blank.
We have discussed, but never used it, in manufacturing methods that are 
quantity sensitive ... there is a high setup for one way that is justified 
only when extremely high volume, thus at time of order release, based on 
volume needed, production management can select the manufacturing method to 
be used.

Think of part identification being ... item + facility + manufacturing 
method (mode)
