All the answers /advice given in the thread are correct and it's not
uncommon for software vendors to want to know that their clients are in
compliance with their licence.

My company, Abacus Ltd, have a product called eXert (www.exert.gg) which
allows you to perform the same checks on your application usage. Using this
product you can be certain how many actual users (named or concurrent) that
you have for your application. Our tool woks in a similar way to the Infor /
Caponline tool but we collect far more information about the usage. In
addition to being able to monitor your application usage you have the
ability to collate data for compliance regulation (SOX etc) and to monitor
application security.

If your software licence allows the vendor to audit you then this cannot be
avoided but by using eXert to constantly monitor your usage you can avoid
any nasty surprises when you are audited.

They are not owned by Infor, but Infor is their only client.
We just completed the audit process and so far it has been painless.
They will have you download a PC application that periodically monitors
your BPCS environments and extracts data to the PC. You will be asked to
send the extracted data back to them on a weekly basis for a period of 6
weeks.
There is nothing to load on the servers and I ran into no issues with
the software. The only thing that took a little headwork was finding a
PC that we could leave attached to the network and running for the 6
week audit.
I'd guess at 2 or 3 hours of effort total over the 6 weeks. That
includes the initial conversation with the guy from the audit company,
installing the software and sending the data back to them.
They have a detailed FAQ and install instructions on their site - though
you may need a password from them to get to it.
As I understood it, if you have BPCS, then the terms of your license
require that you allow this audit to occur.

After having gone to their web site (http://www.caponline.org/) they
seem to
be a division of Infor. The division seems to be dedicated to insuring
that
Infor clients are in compliance with their licensing rules.

Can anyone tell me if this is legitimate, and if so, what does this
accomplish?

Dear Mr. Cavaini,

I have made several attempts at contacting you to discuss this BPCS
audit, but have not been able to touch base with you.
This BPCS audit is a required audit, it is not an optional audit, or an
attempt at a software sales.

Please let me know if you have any questions or problems that are
keeping you from starting the audit process.
Otherwise we will have to escalate this audit request to Amerequip
Corporation CEO.

Regards,
