I thought it was done automatically if lot tracability is turned on. 
Are you not finding that to be true?

Don't know if it's changed in the later releases but one thing that 
tends to trip up users is the expectation that the lowest lot number is 
allocated first - FIFO is done by expiration date, not lot number sequence.
