    88 BS VALUE 0  .    
    88 BN VALUE 1  .

 PROCEDURE DIVISION.    
 
     SET BS TO TRUE     
 
    if (a equal "S"    
     and bS          )  
         display "( OK" 
     end-if             

     if  a equal "S"    
     and bS             
         display "  OK" 
     end-if             

Should your problem  belongs to the context (wrong source compiled watched by 
the debugger, other sentence -end-if- not well understood by the compiler ) ??
