True - although I don't normally recommend that because in general it is so
much less efficient than using packed.  Interestingly this is also true of
mainframes but ... 

I would _very_strongly_ recommend that you get an experienced System i
COBOLer on board even if only for a month or two.   I love that you are
trying to learn it for yourself - but trust me - it is going to cost you a
minimum of ten times as much in wasted effort as it would if you hired
someone for even just a month.  I can say this with a clear conscience
because I don't do that kind of contracting!

I have been involved with hundreds of mainframe conversions over the years -
almost all of the ones that got into trouble did so because they didn't have
experienced staff on board.
