R: Encrypting contents of fields

I suppose the starting point is to use some algorythm written in Cobol. Caesar 
algorythm (change EBCDIC value of each char and eventually rotating some of 
them) is the simplest way. 
With such a solution you have to build one routine that does the job. You may 
also add a verification tabel containing the name of the program / user / ..... 
authorized to call the routine. 
Otherwise you may call your IBM representative for encryption at system level.

Hello.

We sometimes use programmed check of passwords in certain functions.  The 
passwords are stored as normal alphanum fields in a file.  Our internal 
revision pinpoints that these fields should be encrypted.

Anyone with experience from encrypting/decrypting data in DB2-fields? As simple 
as possible...
