Mail using Disk Space -- DOMINO400

I have had an number of people 'archive' their mail to their local drives.
 I run "compact -S 10" every night.  Will this just compress the file on the 400
or will it free up disk space.   Will I be forced to do a reclaim storage in
order to regain disk space?
