I have an agent which will slay the server on our development machine, 
(uniprocessor).

One work around, (please, no stones), is to get a multiprocessor.  That 
way any one task can only take up one processor.  For example, on our 
12way the most cpu consumed by any one task is 8%.  When something hits 
8%, that's a runaway job.  But, the other jobs chug along just fine.
