You can hook up a SAN to the iSeries and create an ASP for the IFS to exist
in. The costs can be prohibitive. You also need the latest hardware.
Throughput with the latest fiber is fast at 2GB connection speeds. No
performance issues. Cost and setup will be very expensive and time
consuming.
It is recommended only for the biggest systems (like mine) that need High
availability switched ASPs for both hardware and OS400 redundancy.

If you need cheap AS400 Disk units or alternatives go to the estorage site
and download the white paper.

http://www.estorageinc.com/white_papers/index.htm

They sell very cheap drives for the iSeries.

Other options are to use file compression in R6, to save space.Works well.
Look up LZ1 in your Domino 6 Admin Guide.

If you are a small shop you can always switch to linux, solaris, unix, etc
for cheaper hardware, software platforms. Windows works too, I use it
when I need to save money.

subject: Domino using EXTERNAL DASD

Hello all,

We love the stability of Domino in the AS400 however DASD is a concern.
My company will not buy additional DASD for our exixting AS400 Domino
machine.

We are pretty much running at full system capacity.

We think that we could have the domino application accessing/maintaining
data to
an EXTERNAL device ( EMC IP 40700 or anyother storage device)

Has anyone been able to setup something like this ?

I am not sure about EMC, but we were considering doing this with a NetApp
server and NetApp actually came back and told us that this would not work
because the throughput would be about 8MB/second (horrible!!).

You can check with EMC to see if they have specs on external storage with
iSeries and Domino.

I would think it would be as simple as assigning the directory holding
your domino data to that external server. Not that I have any experience
doing that though. I question whether the cost/gb is really that
different on that machine. Why won't they buy more?
Cost/GB? IBM's new drives hold a lot. Also, you can get used drives dirt
cheap. We've went both ways.
Frame full? An expansion unit is probably cheaper than one of those
external units. Or just buy a new iSeries with 70gb drives.
Their 400's being obsoleted so they can get in their new pet hardware?
Change jobs or learn the new hardware.

Also, you can get internal iSeries storage from eStorage, Inc. (formerly
BCC). The pricing for new dasd is significantly less than what IBM
charges. You can also get 15k RPM drives that you can use with your
current PCI architecture so that you don't have to invest in the PCI-X
IOA's (even though that will help as well).
