There are three commands that we run on a regular basis: compact, fixup
and updall. There are multiple ways to run them. They can be run when
the server is up - but some databases in use will not be affected. There
are ways to run them when the server is down.
Our program uses Domino api's to retrieve a list of all the domino servers
on a system. Bring them down, do the compact, fixup and updall and then
bring the servers back up. It spawns a separate job for each server. I
could probably post that code if there's an interest.

"The culprit seems to be Notes" can be verified with some periodic
running of RTVDSKINF / PRTDSKINF and the V5R3 RTVDIRINF / PRTDIRINF. Craig
also wrote a program that does something like RTVDIRINF to a multiple
member file. And a report to compare two members to let you know which
directory has grown by what percent. We have 11 Domino servers on one
machine. The main email one eats up an additional 1gb each business day.
Management is not interested in archiving, limiting attachment size, etc.
A check for more disk and better tape drives has been deemed to be more
inline with our business objectives. A spam blocker has been implemented.

Subject
Auto-Compacting?

Good morning,

For starters, I'm not a big Notes expert although I've been using it for
years and have set up an occasional agent to automate some tasks.
Apparently our disk space has "jumped" about 10% over the last couple of
weeks on our 112.7GB system. This has caused our nightly backup to run
longer and longer. The culprit seems to be Notes which is pretty much the
only application running on this system. It also doesn't seem to be tied
to any one user.

I'm not sure if we have a job to regularly compact databases or not. Is
this a setting that I could check in Domino or would it be a command
issued
by a scheduled job? Any other ideas? Thanks.
