Tom,

With only 1 CPU you will have to try UPDATE_SUPRESSION_TIME= value in
minutes which will batch up the update requests
and make the job more efficient.

Also, generally speaking any database index set to update immediately will
be queued for indexing
whenever there is a change to the database. You may want to use
Update_Suppression_Time to limit those duplicate requests.
Update_Suppression_Limit overrides the NOTES.INI Update_Suppression_Time
setting if a certain number of duplicate requests to update indexes and
views are received. (Duplicate requests are a waste of clock cycles.)

We have also changed may views on large databases to update hourly or
daily. (Chronos job run on a scheduled basis).

Indexer is the most CPU intensive job, and is rarely idle.

Try UPDATE_SUPRESSION_TIME=10

Do you have so many databases that it's time to start the cycle again
before or shortly after it finishes the previous cycle?

I don't know for certain, but it seemed like a reasonable thing to
consider. My server has something just north of 1000 databases and I see
a
lot of updates going on. I don't think it's a constant thing, but my
server is hardly overworked.

You may want to add another Update task:

You can add the Notes.ini line: UPDATERS=X or this is from the help file

To improve view indexing performance, you can run multiple Update tasks.
Doing this can affect server performance and is recommended primarily for
multi-processor machines. On a server with multiple processors, enable a
maximum of one Update task per processor.
Using a Configuration settings document
  1. From the Domino Administrator, click the Configuration tab.
  2. Next to "Use Directory on," select the server that stores the
Domino Directory you want to modify.
  3. Expand Server - Configurations.
  4. Do one of the following:
Click Edit Configuration to edit an existing Configuration settings
document
Click Add Configuration to create a new Configuration settings document
  5. Click the NOTES.INI Settings tab.
  6. Click Set/Modify Parameters.
  7. In the Item box, select Updaters. In the Value box, enter the
number of Update tasks to run. Then click OK.
  8. Click Save and Close.
  9. Restart the server so that the setting takes effect.

If the recommendation for CPUs applies to the AS/400, we only have 1
CPU,
or has anyone not found this to be an issue. Update looks to be on
average
only consuming 3.8% CPU, it is probably safe to try another.

Is there a statistic to see some kind of "queue depth" for views that
are
   waiting to be re-built?

You may want to add another Update task:

You can add the Notes.ini line: UPDATERS=X or this is from the help
file

To improve view indexing performance, you can run multiple Update
tasks.
Doing this can affect server performance and is recommended primarily
for
multi-processor machines. On a server with multiple processors, enable
a
maximum of one Update task per processor.

Lol - I have someone with 453+ folders in her mail file. Love the indexing

on that!
