I support two of these units for one of our customers who also allows us to route our email through it since we are a teeny tiny fraction of the mail they carry (well except for paul that brings us up some :-) Of the two units one is doing outbound and one doing inbound. The outbound unit makes sure that all the folks connected to the network (which functions much as an ISP) are not spamming or polluted with viri. This wee we kicked about 1.3M spam and 1700 viruses and allowed about 150K messages to pass.

We have been very pleased with the software and functions though we can always find something we'd like them to do. Someone mentioned the latest update, we have that as well and it provided several of the features we were looking for in addition to the better blocking.

One issue we have had is with their hardware. We have had multiple failures on these things including BOTH units going brackets up two weeks ago two days apart. If you don't have their 'instant replacement' coverage you're hosed and even then it takes a couple days to get the things. They use very low end components. The disks are mirrored (they show RAID but hey, it's only 2 drives!) however we've never had a disk failure, usually power supplies and mother boards.

One of my customers tried their http spyware/malware/crapware scanner/blocker box and has had it for many months and it still doesn't work despite multiple replacements. It won't pass authentication for one and after about 30 minutes stops all traffic until you reboot it. NOT recommending that one.

We are going to do an eval on the Barracuda Spam firewall.

What is the latest on the product? Is it living up to its reputation?

Thx,
