I typically do a 1-to-1. My join issue was a bit complex. I have
multiple divisions. Each division may have many plants. Each plant has
their own item master. For example division DTI
DTIKVLF = Their Kendallville plant's library
DTIGARF = Their Garret plant's library
IIM = Item master
DTIKVLF/IIM may have items A,B,C. DTKGARF may have A,G. Their "combined"
file should have A,B,C,G. Only one A. So I create a combined file and
that is pulled down into Domino via LEI. We do not push back up.
No join files are used.

Join files are ok for reading. However they can only be used to write to
under very restrictive conditions. Perhaps you could push back up to a
file with a trigger on it that could then update the appropriate file?
