Thanks Ken - I did exactly what you suggested and upon the restart it 
picked up right where it left off. 

I could then see that it was processing one mail file in particular, and 
that user told me this morning that she had to manually delete a bunch of 
outdated calendar reminders.

I see that now it has finally finished. I suspect a compact/fixup on her 
mail file may be in order. 

Anyway the task is now idle (on the greenscreen) and CPU has returned to 
the 'normal' level.
