We have implemented Domino clustering on both Windows (for applications)
and iSeries (for mail) which works very well. If your users are using
Notes clients, you will probably have to use Domino clustering rather than
another solution (such as Mimix which I know nothing about) as the
failover intelligence in the client depends upon the Domino environment
being clustered.

To provide for HTTP failover, we have modified the standard IBM
redirection database so that it tests the status of the user's primary and
secondary (failover) server and redirects them accordingly, If both are
down, the user gets a customised failure page. This is a lot simpler than
messing around with Internet Cluster Manager which is designed for a
single cluster (we have 10+) and relies upon additional hardware (two
machines if you want failure redundancy of course) per internet site. Our
solution also includes giving the users two URLs - they will normally use
just one and get failed over if their Domino partition (DPAR) is down but
if the whole iSeries server is down, they will need to use the other URL.

We have this set up in two ways in CSC. One is to have a second iSeries
which is just for failover using IBM's Capacity BackUp option (CBU).
The other way is that we split the primary DPARs across both boxes and
have the secondary DPARs on the alternate box. Both boxes therefore have
half their DPARs as live and half as failover. Both boxes are configured
to handle the entire userbase if required, albeit at t higher CPU
utilisation. This latter method means we do not have to worry about DR
testing as the servers are live all the time. This depends upon
clustering over a WAN so requires good WAN bandwidth between the two data
centres as well as good network connectivity from the various user
locations.

High Availability Solution question

Hello all,

We have been trying to find a High Availability Solution for our iSeries
Domino machine.

We have a few domino applications there and we would like to consider a
solution
So far we only have been able to contemplate the IBM clustering approach.

Has anyone been able to implement this or other kind of alternative and
make recomendations.

We would like to perform a swich-over in case of failure and have all our
users up 24/7

Thanks for your answers

Re: High Availability Solution question

I've implemented a Domino cluster on two Windows boxes that works well.
Domino clustering is not hardware specific however, an iSeries can cluster

with another iSeries or with a Linux box or other hardware/OS.

Depending on DASD requirements, a lower cost solution to evaluate the
effectiveness of a Domino cluster might be to configure a Linux box and
create a cluster with your iSeries.
