Update - it looks like using icalendar is the best way to do this. But
there are a few 'gotchas'.
I've been able to create a clear text file containing multiple events and
email it to the user who imports it (as an .ics file) and it will update
the calendar with the multiple entries.
The only problem I've encountered is that should I need to update one of
those entries using a second ics file, (to say changing the subject to
indicate an appointment cancellation) it has the effect of updating the
intended event but then it deletes any other event that was created with
the original import. I've paid attention to the requirements (according to
the specs) for the METHOD, UID, DTSTAMP and SEQUENCE fields but those
don't seem to have any effect on this problem. Perhaps I'm missing
something?
What I did find is that if I import each event individually I can update
each event individually without affecting any of the others. But that
method of entering the events would be quite tedious for the user.
So my question is this: Has anyone used an ics file containing multiple
events to add entries to a calendar and then use subsequent ics files to
update individual events?
My only other thought is to do a global delete of all the events
originally sent and then repopulate them all again to get the updates.
