Rob:

"Why the delay on hardware? Does 8.5 impact performance, or might it be
the cpu hit that may be taken by DAOS? You could go to 8.5 without DAOS,
(unless the temptation to start using DAOS would be too great)."

My concern is if my 70% of DASD utilization is a potential issue, and at
the moment I'd rather be safe than sorry. Also new hardware will mean more
DASD and V6R1 (currently we are at V5R4).

"Sooner or later those users are going to need an archive anyway, unless
your turnover is really high before the two year mark."

Turnover isn't too high and I agree that they will eventually need it.

Chris:

"You will need to run another compact -c to compress the current
documents.
Indirect file is just a text list of databases - one per line:

mail/abc.nsf
mail/bob.nsf
....

It goes in data directory and commands like compact refer to it that way.
If
your ind files are in a subdirectory, then it would be load compact
indfiles/file.ind -a"

Thanks for clarifying - this may let me archive only those who have the
really large mail files - probably only 20% of my users are over 500mb,
with most everyone else less than 300mb. That might be another option
rather than archiving everyone.

Regards, Jerry
