Thought I'd update everyone on the progress over at Zappie (www.zappie.net).

The read-only JDB/400 has been available for a while... as you may already know,
this package allows access to the AS/400 database using RPG-like methods such as
CHAIN and READE.

The newest addition is JBUI (Java Blockmode User Interface). This package
allows the programmer to create, with just a few lines of code, a display panel
that supports:

1. Input/output or output only fields (via a protect method)
2. Error indication (via an error method, which changes the color of the field)
3. Error message list (similar to an error message subfile)
4. Buttons with text
5. Optional function key accelerators for the buttons (such as F1)
6. An EXFMT method which waits for the user to press a button, then returns the
button identifier

A pre-release version is available at
www.zappie.net/java/techniques/jbui/jbui.htm. Take a look.

There are a couple of more plans in the works: JDQM (Java Data Queue Messaging)
will provide the final link to creating full client/server applications, using
Java on the client and RPG or Java on the AS/400. Also, I'm looking at some
combined classes from JDB/400 and JBUI which will take most of the work out of
creating simple panels for inquiry functions. I hope to combine this with JDQM
to make one-step client/server inquiry panels a reality.

And all this is FREE. With source. Drop by some time and check it out...
