You've done a terrific job and a lot of work!  Was this all with
bytecode?  Was JIT enabled or disabled?  Was there any compiled Java
involved?

It certainly is disappointing that the 400 runs so much slower than the
client, which I assume was some flavor of Windows.

Given IBM's betting the farm on Java, I think they'd better start
milking the cows faster if they want to save the farm.
