The constant " " is not the same as the object "field", so they will always compare not equal. You need to code !field.equals(" "); That does a String compare. The != asks if they are the same object, not whether the contents are the same... In rpg on the 400 i would say (field ifne " ") but i guess that doesn't work. With debug i know the field is empty.
