It doesn't. You say execute(), we do.

We typically prime the pump with the data, because surprisingly,
we found that in the real world, after an execute query, a lot of
applications retrieve the data.... 8-)

With regard to your 'how do I know which JDBC version I'm using'?

Simple answer: JDBC 2.0 is available on JDK 1.2 and beyond.

More complex answer: Many JDBC drivers implement JDBC 2.0 even
though, when you're running on earlier JDK releases, the
interfaces in the JDK (java.sql.*) only let you portably
access JDBC 1.0.
Check your driver documentation. Both the toolbox and the JDBC
drivers support JDBC 2.0 when you're NOT running on JDK 1.2,
but you have to do some typecasting.
See http://www.as400.ibm.com/developer/jdbc FAQs and search for JDBC 2.0
See http://www.as400.ibm.com/toolbox JDBC FAQs and do the same
