I do it all the time, although not from Java. I use the crystal vbx control
from VB programs. For straight reporting, I just use ODBC and then
distribute the report. It's a bit slow but these are not operational
transactions so speed is really not an issue.

If you want open source and don't mind giving up a nice GUI for report
designinng take a look at Cocoon, this apart of the Apache project and
can create files various file types, hos no licensing fees, and is of
course opensource.

Otherwise Elixir's jReport is a highly priced pay for closed source
reporting tool that allows gui report design.
