David,
The JDBC connection pool implementation in commons-dbcp has a property you
can set to check the connection to make sure it is still valid. Their
docs say to set the property to a SQL SELECT statement that will return 1
row. Apparently, it also has to be able to return at least the 1 row to
work.
So my guess, is that is the only way to really tell.
Hoe this helps.

Anyone know of a way to test a JDBC connection without actually doing
anything significant? I basically want to make sure a JDBC connection is
working, but without putting a load on the system.
Thanks!
david
