> can anyone explain how they do it in big projects or > open source projects We let the Source Control system (ClearCase in our instance) take care of the versioning and branching in the source tree. We use ClearCase view profiles which actually filter the source files based upon the version and/or branch we need to work on. It works very well, you can be sure that you are sandboxed with a particular set of source files and that they match the version you are working on. Also ClearCase has decent merging, so that we can use it to try and automatically back fit fixes to prior versions. --phil
