Kevin,

How do you retrieve your record? I wouldn't expect the character
conversion to add much overhead. From your description it seems more
likely that you are getting a new connection for every record. Do you
have a profiler like JProbe? That can really help isolate where the time
is being spent.

I am in the process of developing a process on a iSeries that consists
of a
ILE RPG extract, and a Java consumer. At the moment the Java component
is
taking 2 seconds to process a transaction. Which, is not acceptable.
One of
the IBM JDBC performance recommendations, from the Web site, is to
convert
the tables to Unicode CCSID.

I know that one side affect of the Unicode CCSID is that it requires
two
bytes per character. Which means increased DASD, and more data being
sent
to the remote system (where the Java component resides).

Can someone tell me, in detail, what it will mean to my ILE RPG extract
?
