At Touchtone, with our Wintouch and ThinView applications, we didn't have the luxury of using the Toolbox classes, since they hadn't even reached beta test by the time we were shipping product.
So we used a proprietary interface protocol, calling the 
socket APIs (and in the case of Wintouch, the RPG "guts") 
from ILE C.
We don't recommend this for new development, although it 
does have the advantage that it doesn't require "Host 
Servers" to be running, or even installed.
