How to redirect stderr and stdout of QSH into a java program

Hi all:

I am writing a program to log the results of SSH FTP running in QSH

The script will look like this:

/QOpenSys/usr/bin/sftp  blahblahblah
java -cp blahblahblah Class $?

sftp will write an error message to stderr and put the exit status in $? 
(or so I am told).

How would I get the java program Class to read the stderr (or stdout) of 
the QShell it runs in?

Can stderr (or stdout) be re-directed to stdin then call java Class?

I am looking for something quicker than redirecting stderr (or stdout) to 
a file then reading the file with the Java program.

Any ideas?
