Threads aren't very difficult at all ... I use them all the time.
Threads are very expensive objects to create so you should always use a thread pool for things like this, which allows you to avoid killing performance with new Threads if the Java stuff cannot keep up with the RPG requests.

You should also consider how you want the system to behave during peaks, because it might well be sufficient with e.g. ten threads in the pool and anymore than ten requests will just have to wait.
