    Hi Neill,
I first played around with Java in the summer of 1996, PC only. I got
serious about it in February, 1997, and I believe the AS/400 had Java/JDBC
capabilities sometime in 1997. I do know it was well established in 2000,
because that's when I wrote the jGuru/Sun JDBC 2.0 tutorial.
Here are some links with some definitive info at V4R2. Notice that the
Toolbox is listed as also running on V3R2.

Also, the midrange Java archive shows the first message in October,
1997. David should remember that...

Subject: When was Java first introduced on the i?
Hi
I am writing a spec for some work that is using Java, and I just wondered
how long has Java actually been available on the i?
I think its about 2000, possibly earlier V4R2 time? Does that sound
right?
Thanks
Neill
