AFAIK, this has nothing to do with java specifically ... but just general TCP/IP sockets.

On the unix machine, are more than one IP in the same subnet?  I suspect not, as usually assigning multiple IP's to a single machine is so the machine can participate in multiple subnets (not always, of course).

Assuming this, then the unix machines routing table should determine what IP the client will use to connect to the server.

Of course it is possible that more than one IP is on the same subnet ... in which case I don't think you can control which IP the client will use to connect to the server.  In this case I would suggest you ask that firewall rules be setup for all client IP's that might be used.
