For Java, here is their documentation on dealing with fonts.

You will notice how their example actually creates a new style object and
then applies it to the cell...rather than trying to retrieve the style from
the cell and alter it.
I'm guessing that will have to be the approach for your situation as well.
Create a red-font style object and then point the desired cell(s) to the
new style.
