Tried that with no luck either :-(. I did find the IBM library and
load it into our maven repository. I might play around with it to see
if I can't get something working. I'm leaning towards the stored
procedure calls at this point. I don't want to have to rely on the
library from the server if possible.

I think that's because there's an implicit cast in there, Wouldn't that be this instead?:

AS400JDBCConnection jdbcConnection = (AS400JDBCConnection)((WsJdbcConnection) dataSource.getConnection()).getMetaData().getConnection();
