There is probably a setting in the app server that you need to change to use something other than the default JDK. Also, some app servers (like WebSphere and WebLogic) require a specific JDK and you will not be able to change it.

Well that is an improvement, after exporting the variable (thanks steve)
it does show 1.6 at the green screen prompt and in qshell... but
not in the app server.
