It is something we developed, starting around the turn of the 21st
century, as part of our (long-since mostly abandoned for lack of demand)
"ThinView" multi-function product. We developed a standalone version
(which is what we normally use for remote access to customers; we've
never come up with a good license-control system that would allow us to
release it as a product), and we also integrated it with our Wintouch
CRM product.
I wrote the UI myself, based on a composite of real InfoWindow II
look-and-feel, with the look-and-feel of a couple of the more
aesthetically pleasing emulation products out there (e.g., WRQ
Reflection), while avoiding the look and feel of WSF or (especially) RUMBA.
Over the years, I've selectively implemented TN5250e features. And I
added data stream capture functionality in order to help me remedy
problems when some application sent an unimplemented command or order
(it's been quite a few years since I've had to deal with that situation).
I've never actually used TN5250j myself. And as to IBM-supplied
emulators, about the only even remotely current one I've used, other
than through a GoToMeeting session, has been the one supplied in LAN
Console for our newest box. (Not quite as ugly as RUMBA, but close).
The thought occurred to me that one avenue of investigation (after I've
had a chance to try TN5250j myself) is for the customer with the
crashing problem to try TN5250j on a few machines, and see if it is
subject to the same crashing as our emulator.
