I notice it works fine on console tn5250 but not xt5250.

Make sure you have this in /usr/local/share/tn5250/XTerm (if you are *not* using ~/.Xdefaults) or in ~/.Xdefaults if you are using it:

<Key>BackSpace: string("\177")
