basically auto-signon is what I'm looking for right now, yes. While I'm at it I would like to explore other options as well though.
I'm running a raspbian (debian wheezy) on a raspberry pi

Are you just looking to auto-signon? This can be done easily by setting
up some appropriate settings in the RC file. What operating system are
you running tn5250 on?
