Lois,

Typically, you have to install a MICR chip in the printer to make the font
available.  Then there are special printer control codes used to turn on the
font.  I have forgotten most of my knowledge on IPDS printers, but you may
be able to embed the control codes into the DDS to turn the font on and off
as needed.  You could also check with IBM and see if a MICR font exists for
IPDS or AFP printers.

Note - you need to contact your bank and have them verify a test run of the
new checks so that they can check the MICR imprint.  Positioning on the
check form is critical, along with the quality of the printing.

Here's the minor sales pitch (y'all knew it was coming): Depending on the
volume of checks and other pre-printed forms that you use, you may be able
to purchase a forms package and recover your costs in quickly.  Determine
the cost of all the pre-printed forms used in a year, along with a factor
for operator setup and handling of all the forms.  Subtract from this the
cost of the same amount of plain copy paper and blank check stock (the
special paper with watermark but no printing).  Our electronic forms

  Is anyone using their ISeries to print micr font?  We have our check
format set up to print on a laser printer but we are trying to figure out
how to code the micr in the DDS.  We understand that we need the special
printer and ink, but we can't purchase a software package.  (We are part of
the automotive business so there is no extra cash right now - just ask GM.)
Also, any pros and cons on micro printers would be appreciated.
