In the consumer products world manufacturers of things like socks and toys -
essentially anything that gets shipped in quantity - vendors are required to
ship each store's order complete. If multiple packages/boxes contain the
same item those packages/boxes must be identified as for the same order and
item. It's a big enough task when all of an item arrives at the packing
station at the same time. The job gets bigger when the item arrives in
multiple "picks", so they spend considerable effort making sure they pick
once per item - order if possible.
To avoid packing the same item multiple times (and compounding the effort to
identify all the boxes) the approach is to wait until the inventory is
available before cutting the pick list. How long they wait is a matter of
company policy - some wait until the full order is there, others want 95%
(or more) of all line items to be complete before they launch the picking
effort for any order.
In all the implementations I've been associated with database triggers are
used to capture inventory file updates and feed an ancillary analysis
process. That process tracks each order, printing picking tickets only
after the order completion threshold has been reached. In practice it has
taken about a week to 10 days to complete the implementation process.

Obviously that would be ideal but I am certain that would not occur if we
were able to get multiple pick list. We would just be happy to have them
ship the same day separate rather than consolidated.

If multiple pick lists are generated for the same order/line item how does
shipping make sure all the picked and packed merchandise goes out
together?

The original design of Pick List that was revised in R6.5 of MAPICS
allowed
multiple pick lists up to the total amount on the item to be generated.

In recent weeks we have seen a spike in some capacity constrained line

are running into a problem with Mapics inability to have multiple unshipped pick list open for an particular line item. An example of the problem we have is as follows. We have 50 of ABC in stock at 5am but require 100 so a picklist 123 generates for the 50 out that are available. At noon we receive 200 more of ABC but pick list 123 has not processed
yet
so no additional pick list can be generated At 3 pm we process pick list 123 and at 4pm we invoice, since we shipped
at 3pm we can now generate a new pick list but it waits until the next morning at 5am when we generate our next pick list. How are other list members dealing with the fact that only one pick list
can be generated at a time?
