I do not believe that the rename tool works at later releases.  You would 
have to check the website for that.  What about this scenario:
Current environment example = MM
New R7.8 environment example XX
Moving from any version to R7.8 or most likely R9 is a "migration", not an 
upgrade.  After migrating from MM to XX, using the Create Environment 
option, build a new environment from MM, say, OO.  Now, delete the MM 
environment.  Finally, using the Create Environment option from the R78 XX 
environment and call it MM.
Your ODBC should not care about the database changes in the new MM 
environment but Crystal reports might...
