Thanks Leif.  The reason i was posing the question is that I have seen code
that sets a pointer to some character data, and the CPYBWP follows.  Even
though there is no pointer data in the data being copied.

For example:

/*--Get the output file.
  CPYBLA           Query_Output_Type,'F';
  SETSPPO         .Query_Data,380;
  CPYBWP          .Query_Data_Offset,.Query_Data;
  CMPBLA(B)        Query_Data_Offset,
                       X'00000000'/EQ(@Dft_Output_File);

SETSP  pointer, data
makes a pointer to the data
CPYBWP data1, data2
copies data2 to data1 in such
a way that any pointers already
with data2 are preserved as
pointer in data1.
CPYBLA data1, data2 would
copy the bytes only, but would not
copy the "tagbits" that mark some
data as a pointer.

I have a feeling that the question is ill posed
and that you really want something else.
Could you show the piece of code you
have and explain what you are trying to do?
