>> AFAIK, IBM does not develop OS/400 on the AS/400 but on RS/6000 or
equivalent. OS/400 images or objects are then transferred over ...... So the
whole "infrastructure" around the source of OS/400 must also be opened up.
Very likely, the developers (us) must adopt a similar way of working (i.e.
not using the AS/400 as our development platform).

You can (sorta) use the same platform as Rochester if you wish - I believe
it is based on the Carnegie Melon Andrew workbench. Not sure how much is
still done on the VM systems - the 400s are powerful enough now. In the
S/38 and early 400 days there were two problems, no version control/build
tool that was complex enough and could run on the S/38 etc. Also there was
not enough horsepower to do the builds so the MI object was built on VM and
then downloaded for the final part of the build - even that was slower than
Christmas!

I think the builds are now done on a combination of RS/6000 and iSeries -
possibly the really old stuff like SEU <grin> RPG/400 and COBOL/400 are
still done on the big iron - not even certain of that.
