Would anybody have any idea why

TRIML FOO, BAR, ' ';

where BAR is CHAR(475) and FOO is BIN(4,0), and BAR contains 5 EBCDIC digit characters followed by 470 blank spaces,
would return 475, instead of just 5?

nevermind

Blame the verstenken OPM debugger, defaulting to only the first 200 characters of a string variable: there WAS garbage on the end, because I'd expanded the variable (it's a general purpose string variable) without adjusting the code that clears the tail end of it.
