Yes. In QuestView, one of the very first things I noticed over a decade
ago was that the hack-based meta-data retrieval was forcing us to play a
constant game of catch-up with the operating system, and it wasn't doing
anything that couldn't be done, from V2R2 on, with API calls. The use of
hacks, although sometimes faster than APIs, was killing the product
simply because it was killing Security 40 compatibility, and taking up
all our time just keeping what we had working. It took several years,
but I managed to make the product hack-free, and once that was achieved,
we had a lot more time to devote to new features and other products.
Hack-based code is, at best, a sometimes-necessary evil.
