Ken, I think your comments more than echo that of our segment of the industry. Other segments depend more on certifications as a entry benchmark and in some areas (IBM BP's) there is a cert requirement for business reasons. And, I've NEVER EVER been able to understand just why it is that damn near each and every other certification has a prep course or manuals or as in pSeries's case a whole slew of Redbooks and a 2 1/2 day class offered at pSeries tech conf's(wasn't at the last one for the first time in a LONG time)...and the room is always PACKED. AS400/iSeries/i5/i/(insert new name here) doesn't ANY serious cert prep mechanisms, other than the lowly operator cert prep offered by MC....(yawn)..... And I know there's probably a flurry of people that are going to be (annoyed) at me for being (negative) on this, but if the industry expects people to take certs seriousely, there not only has to be much broader demand but there also needs to be a much better organized prep mechanism than exists now. I've been in IT, programming in RPG for over 30 years from the IBM 360 Model 20 through the System/3, through the System/38, and now on the System I(AS/400). I've been a manager, director, etc. I have never taken a certification test, and at this point in my career, I have no intentions too. Tests are all well and good, but some people do better on written tests, and not so well in practical application. I think its up to the individual whether they think that it will be worth their while. When I hire someone, I look at the work experience, problem solving technique, etc. long before I would look at whether they are certified or not. An interesting thread was started on Slashdot about IT Certifications (http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/06/0337209). I'm curious as to how valuable certifications are in the System i market. david -- This is the Midrange Jobs: Postings & Discussion (MIDRANGE-JOBS) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-JOBS@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-jobs or email: MIDRANGE-JOBS-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -- This is the Midrange Jobs: Postings & Discussion (MIDRANGE-JOBS) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-JOBS@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-jobs or email: MIDRANGE-JOBS-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -- This is the Midrange Jobs: Postings & Discussion (MIDRANGE-JOBS) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-JOBS@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-jobs or email: MIDRANGE-JOBS-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
