I started as programmer in 1965 converting IBM 1401 Autocoder to IBM 360
Assembler Language for about 5 years, then converting 1401 to Honeywell 200 for
5 and beginnings of Cobol for 5 years, finally switched over to IBM S3, 32, 34,
36 for more than a decade, then AS400 for almost 20 year and am still an RPG
coder and trying to learn Vb.net, which is a different breed and I am not sure
I will succeed. I now have a full time job and part time job as RPG coder.
Not a glutton for punishment, just lots of starting over. Only thing I did
right was maintain technical skills as a programmer, neglected lots of other
things like networking skills, Internet skills and other. I have mainframe
friends who are still hanging in there with COBOL. Other than self employment,
I have never worked more than 5 years at the same job. I know many manager
types who cannot go back to coding for whatever reason. If you enjoy coding
and are patient and keep doing the networking, etc., there
is a good chance it will come back around for you in my humble opinion. I
know how easy it is to hit the panic button. It is so easy to think everything
is stacked against you when you are not working and I have often thought that,
especially due to affirmative action and out-sourcing.

It seems there have been two types of companies: the top notch ones who may
not pay as well but provide nice severances, often do buyouts, have great
benefits, and they are becoming much more scarce.

Second job, two weeks shy of 11 years
Third job... my last? Everyone here is a long timer.
