The message I got at Common this year was not what it has been in the past. In past Common's it seems that there has been some new flash item that wowed everybody. Way back it was LAN's, then Internet, then Java. All of these are important elements to IS and all are "becoming" in our environments. This time there seemed to be more focus on core IS issues. Familiar buzzwords were: Return On Investment. Cost of Ownership. Leveraging technology. Retooling Infrastructure. There was some focus also on how IS contributes to the bottom line. Midrange Systems did a nice job of presenting awards to 7 IS departments that solved serious computing problems for their respective companies. Again, the focus was on job done and dollars saved. The introduction of thin client network computers contributed to this train of thought because their cost savings is realized aver a period of years based on ability to manage the clients and the resulting cost savings there.
