US Robotics (er - 3Com) have a modem for much less that US$500 that will
do 33,600bps dial-up in SYNCHRONOUS mode - with V.25bis auto dial
capability ? Please post the model # of this modem.

Hey - IBM Canada will still sell you a new 2400bps 5853 for CDN$1,100
too. That's a real bargain for us - only 13% exchange on the US price
instead of the current 40% !! Maybe someone can make a killing
exporting this wonderful product from Canada to the US ? ;-)
(They are about $100 on the used market).

It seems really stupid that IBM never drops the prices of old crap they
have in stock when a newer/better/faster/cheaper product comes along.
They must have tons of excess warehouse space to store all this old
junk.

They also have the 7857 19,200bps modem on the books for CDN$1,750.
Now admittedly the 7857 is a solid modem (remote configuration, etc.),
but it can only talk 19.2Kbps to another 7857 - I believe it's only
9,600bps (maybe 12K or 14.4K ?) to another modem like a 7855.
At least the 7852-400 (CDN$692) is a step in the right direction (for
speed & price) for IBM.
